Frank Cornelissen is the proprietor behind the wine, and it is also the name of his azienda agricola (farm winery) in Sicily. His philosophy is one of respecting the earth and listening to what it has to say, using only organic farming methods and studying biodynamic principles to be more in touch with the land. He produces wines and olive oils with strong terroir identities and mineral depth from the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. Sicily is traditionally planted with high density vines, but he chose to spread out the old vines and plant other crops like fruit and wheat, and the new grapes he has planted are on their own vines. The grapes are purposely low yielding and hand selected so that only the perfect ones make it into the finished wine. They never add anything to their wines or use any non-neutral containers to ensure the terroir and grape characters are best expressed, and the result is astounding. This pure nerello mascalese comes from vines averaging over 60 years old, leading to depth and concentration of ripe fruit with the perfect balance of tannin. It has lush red and dark fruit aromas with graphite, herbs, and a touch of earth with some umami and a slight tingle on the palate with a dry, mineral finish. Biodynamically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
