|Appellation/Sub-Region||Hautes Côtes de Nuits AOC|
|Vineyard/Cellar Practices||Sustainably Grown|
Julien Cruchandeau's winery is located in the hills above Nuits St. Georges in the small village of Chaux (some 400 inhabitants). The area, known as Hautes Côtes de Nuits, is a region getting more acclaim as climate in Burgundy changes. In essence, the higher altitudes provide perfect growing conditions these days. Julien is a musician and toured around Europe for a while between his time working at Domaine Léchenault and deciding to concentrate on his own winemaking. He finds lots of connection between making wine and playing music. “The methods are different,” he says, “but you are using instruments to transform raw material into a product. And you are working a lot with your senses.” He harvests by hand and farms organically, with limited production. 'Les Valançons' is a single vineyard site, a scant 0.80 ha, with southern exposure on a steep slope in the village of Chevannes. Julien makes the Valançons cuvée with 30% whole cluster and ages it in oak (mostly used) for one year. The generous 2018 vintage yields a wine of silky texture and gorgeously fruited pinot. Julien is a rising star in Burgundy, making high-level wine at great prices for even the new Burgundy drinker! Sustainably grown.
