Cynar takes its name from the bitter artichoke (botanical name Cynara scolymus), and its distinctive bittersweet flavor comes in part from cynarin, a compound found in artichokes. Created in 1949, its secret recipe of 13 botanicals (including the eponymous artichoke) is a classic digestif, noted for its stomach soothing properties. In Italy, it is traditionally sipped on the rocks with an orange twist or served with a splash of soda or tonic. Or try replacing the Campari in your next Negroni with Cynar!
