Daniel Bouland is an old-school producer of compelling and expressive Morgon, making a range of different cuvées from his 7ha of parcels. In the best years, his wines can be aged for 15 years, something not always considered with Beaujolais, but they are incredible in their youth as well. Daniel works alone in his rugged vineyards surrounded by old vines, with his younger vineyards being planted selection massale from the older ones. Everything is harvested by hand from low-yielding vines, and are whole cluster fermented with indigenous yeasts. Wines are aged in very old wood, and are bottled unfiltered. The 'Pre Jourdan' is a newly acquired Lieu-Dit located near Fleurie with 70 year-old vines. The contents of the entire single barrel (a five year-old Rousseau foudre) was purchased by importer Weygandt-Metzler after the inaugural 2018 vintage, making this wine exclusive to the US market. Generous aromas of red and black cherries and berries mingle with hints of violets, cedar, crushed herbs, and a whiff of smoke. On the palate the wine is bright and focused, with layers of vibrant red fruit, well integrated tannins, and a long, complex finish. Sustainably grown, vegan.
