Daou Vineyard was founded by Georges and Daniel Daou in 2007. The Lebanese-born brothers left that country as young children during its civil war, and grew up in France before moving to California to attend UC San Diego. Georges studied mathematics, while Daniel studied engineering, and a series of business successes quickly followed, culminating in the sale of a company they had created to provide software services to the healthcare industry. Finding themselves at a new level of prosperity, they bought the mountain in Paso Robles’ Adelaida District that now bears their name. Daou Mountain is a microclimate all its own, with clay-limestone soils that more closely resemble those of Bordeaux than elsewhere in California. 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean and 2,200’ in elevation, the estate’s holdings stretch for 212 acres, with 120 planted mainly with Bordeaux varietals, particularly cabernet. The 2019 Reserve Cab is classically styled, powerful yet approachable in character. Glorious aromas of ripe plum, blackberry, black cherry, dark chocolate, licorice, and subtle whiffs of cedar and smoked meats lead into an opulent palate that unfurls layer after layer of fresh dark berries. Juicy black plum, wild black raspberry, black cherry, boysenberry, cassis, and cocoa powder dance across a palate marked by a silky texture and delicate notes of toasted oak, forest floor, exotic spices, and dark mineral streaks. Generous, full-bodied, and supremely satisfying to decant now (although definitely age-worthy!) Sustainably grown, vegan.
