|Appellation/Sub-Region||Montlouis Sur Loire AOC|
|Vineyard/Cellar Practices||Certified Organic, Low-Intervention/Natural Wine|
Jacky Blot (along with François Chidaine) is recognized as a pioneer in elevating the reputation of Montlouis- not only taking it out of Vouvray’s shadow, but going a step further to challenge the greats of Burgundy for complex, ageable white wines of intense precision and focus. He purchased eight hectares of 50-75 year old vines in Montlouis in the 1980s, and began transforming the property to organic viticulture in 1988. Techniques such as organic farming, hand harvesting, fermenting with wild yeasts, and avoiding malolactic are so common they are taken for granted today, but at the time were considered revolutionary. This intense commitment to natural practices in the vineyard and non-intervention in the cellar allows the distinctive character and terroir of each site to really shine. ‘Clos de Mosny’ comes from 40-50 year old chenin blanc vines planted on sandy clay soil a mere 2-3 meters above pure limestone. It is fermented with indigenous yeasts, with fermentation and aging both taking place in barrel (20% new oak, 80% 1-4 year old barrels), and does not undergo malolactic fermentation. The result is stunning: spiced baked pears and cream mingle with luscious notes of honeysuckle and jasmine. Its texture is unmistakably opulent while still walking a highwire of electrifying acidity. Complexity, length, and precision are hallmarks of this remarkable bottling, supported by a core of unyielding minerality. A true classic. Certified organic, low intervention/natural wine.
