The same year the grapes were harvested for this sweet wine from the Roussillon region of southern France, the Vietnam war ended and Bruce Springsteen released his debut album. Unperturbed by the progression of events in the world outside, this amber nectar sat serenely in a barrel for the next forty years. Jean-Hubert Verdaguer, like his father before him, creates classic Rivesaltes in the traditional manner. At Domaine de Rancy, they use 100% macabeu grapes. As is usual with natural sweet wines of this style, neutral grape spirits were added to the fermenting grape must to arrest the process before all of the natural sugar converted to alcohol. The resulting dessert wine—alive with acidity as well as sweetness after its forty years’ nap—smells rich and nutty and tastes of golden raisins, chocolate, toffee, and caramel. Not a hint of polyester.
