|Vineyard/Cellar Practices||Organically Grown, Low-Intervention/Natural Wine, Vegan|
Domaine des Marrans is based in Fleurie, the northernmost part of Beaujolais.The Mélinand family has generations of winemaking experience, with Mathieu joining his father, Jean-Jacques, in 2008. Their "vineyard-first" philosophy is reflected in their organic farming practices, and produces wines of impressive purity and minerality. Vinification is done in a traditional manner, through "semi-carbonic" maceration (loading whole grape bunches into a sealed container, which sparks fermentation among the crushed grapes at the bottom of the vessel, but traps the resultant carbon dioxide inside the vessel. This triggers an ‘intracellular’ fermentation in the grapes on top, resulting in a brighter, more fruit-forward style of wine.) This nouveau comes from a 1.5 ha parcel in the village of Saint-Jean d’Ardières, just outside of Morgon, with 45+ year old vines planted on clay/limestone soils. The fruit is hand harvested and fermented whole cluster with indigenous yeasts, including 8 days of semi-carbonic maceration. It is then aged in cement for one month before bottling. With bright floral notes, delicate strawberry and cranberry flavors, and a flourish of herbal spice, this is a fresh and juicy wine great for quaffing with everything from sausages to mac ‘n cheese. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
