Flying under the international radar, seventh-generation winemaker Olivier Giroux founded the Domaine du Clos des Rocs in Loché in 2002. The Puilly-Loché appellation was delineated in the 1940s and has a strong reputation locally though was never exported to the US until recently. Giroux is a big player in the tiny, 32ha appellation, with roughly 30% of all vineyards in his possession. Committed to chemical-free viticulture, Giroux received organic certification in 2014. The “4 saisons” site consists of “noble clay” soils, which add to the intensity of the aromas in the glass. The 40-year-old vines are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts, and élevage takes place half in steel cuve and half in neutral barriques. With a hint of mint on the nose, this wine sings with lemon-lime acidity up front, followed by green apple flavors and a refreshing finish. Certified organic, vegan.
