Côte-Rôtie is the northernmost appellation of the Northern Rhône region, closest to the town of Vienne, and famous for its nearly inaccessible slopes. Wine grower Patrick Jasmin proudly refers to his work on the area’s steep terraces as “la galère” (as in, as hard as rowing below-decks on a galley). Continuing the tradition of his father and grandfather, Jasmin produces excellent wines, cofermenting syrah (95%) with viognier (5%) in the traditional Côte-Rôtie style. The dash of white grapes with the meaty syrah adds an intriguing floral aspect to the wines of this appellation. This 2013 vintage has rounded out nicely and is prime for drinking this year. This is a classic expression, serious, dark, and earthy. This wine brings out a flavor of cooked plum, together with a light muskiness, against a backdrop of spicy cocoa. Rhône lovers and Bordeaux aficionados will be equally charmed. Drink now.
