Like a wine-country West Egg to Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s East Egg, Lirac shares similar characteristics of terroir with its more celebrated neighbor appellation just across the Rhône. Domaine La Consonnière’s Sebastien Cuscusa manages vineyards in both Lirac and Châteauneuf. As is typical for the southern Rhône, grenache dominates, here accompanied by syrah (40%) and mourvèdre (10%) from sixty-year-old vines. A few years’ aging has rounded out the flavors of spicy black cherry, prune, blueberry, eucalyptus, and wild herbs in this 2015 red. Mouth-filling tannins persist without being overpowering. This is a great value for a sophisticated Côtes du Rhône.
