Though Domaine Le Prieuré is centered in the appellation of Saint-Joseph, winemaker Etienne Becheras also oversees a small (less than one hectare) plot of very old vines across and down the Rhône a bit, in the Crozes-Hermitage AOC. Due to the age of the vines, yield is intentionally kept low, and the grapes are harvested manually. After three weeks’ fermentation, ageing takes place in large oak casks over 18 months. All of Le Prieuré’s wines are bottled without fining or filtration. Lush, bright, and full of brambly fruit, this syrah expresses its famous terroir smoothly and elegantly, while still providing ample structure. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
