In this white wine from Cheverny, the familiar sauvignon blanc shares the spotlight with a lesser-known grape: menu pineau. Also sometimes known as orbois or arbois, menu pineau is somewhat of an ampelographical mystery. (Ampelography being the science of classifying grapevine varieties.) In all likelihood a native of the Loire region, menu pineau is generally associated with the Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny appellations. Domaine l’Epichourchois maintains vineyards in both AOC designations, producing wines from eight varieties of grapes altogether (four red and four white). In this blend, the menu pineau softens the acidity of the sauvignon and adds woody aromas of sandalwood and straw, as well as a slight lingering savory tingle on the finish. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
