As a name in winemaking, Marc Kreydenweiss is most closely associated with Alsace. The family domaine produces a well-known selection of Alsatian white wines, especially riesling and pinot gris. At the same time, the Kreydenweiss family also cultivates Mediterranean grapes in the Gard, near Nîmes, under the leadership of Marc Kreydenweiss’s son Jean. The former Domaine des Perrières that Kreydenweiss purchased in 1999 benefits not only from the strong sun of southern France but also from the same kind of large, round stones (“galets roulés”) renowned in the area of Châteauneuf du Pape. Jean and his team farm the vineyards biodynamically and manage their properties with the principles of permaculture in mind. Their “Grimaudes” blend of grenache and carignan opens to earthy, umami aromas along with a touch of licorice and smoke. On the palate: dark purple plum, wild blackberry, and black current with a sprig of thyme, wrapped in supple tannins. Biodynamically grown.
