El Mero Mero (“best of the best”), was founded in 2011 in the town of San Dionisio Ocotopec, Oaxaca. This region experiences very little rainfall, which keeps agave growing low to the ground, forcing them to create more sugars, which results in a more intense flavor. (A similar process happens in wine grapes as well.) All production of this “Mezcalero’s Mezcal” is overseen by mezcalero Justino Garcia Cruz, and the bottle label was designed by iconic Latin American contemporary artist Carlos Zerpa. This delicious mezcal is made from Espadin agave, which is tahona crushed, fermented in Encino oak tubs, then double distilled in copper. The proofing uses the heads and tails of the distillate, and does not use water. An elegant, incredibly sippable mezcal, this offers vegetal notes of fresh agave, accented by delicate hints of herbal smoke, peppery spice, anise, orange peel, and earth.
