East and upriver from Bordeaux lies the sleepily historic town of Bergerac. Straddling the Dordogne, the Bergerac region is sprinkled with castles, forests, and vineyards. With soils containing more limestone than Bordeaux’s and an inland climate with more temperature variation summer to winter, Bergerac represents a distinct terroir from its coastal neighbor region. The de Conti family has farmed at the Château Tour des Gendres since the beginning of the 20th century; the vineyards date to the 1980s, when brothers Luc and Jean de Conti began the winemaking business. They converted the whole property to organic farming practices in the 1990s (the first in the region). The subsequent generation carries on the brothers’ legacy with a commitment to organically grown natural wines. This ‘Cuvée des Conti’ consists of a blend of merlot (45%), malbec (45%), and cabernet franc (10%). Aromas of violet and rose lead to plum and black currant on the palate, with a foundation of stony minerality and well-incorporated tannins. Certified organic, vegan.
