Experimentation is the calling card of winemaker Andrew Jones. His wine label, “Field Recordings”, has become famous for its wide variety of wine styles, which reflect Jones’s openness to working with atypical grape varieties grown all over California. This Edna Valley Pinot Gris is no exception. Here, Jones applies a classic northern Italian style of winemaking called “ramato”, where the juice is left in contact with the skins for an extended period of time (“skin-contact” for short). This yields a beautiful ruby-russet color indicative of the 60-day skin-maceration. After pressing off the skins, the wine spends six months aging in French oak and acacia barrels. This results in a delicious wine, evoking flavors of dried strawberry, just-picked stone fruit, and fresh thyme.
