Monastrell is chief among red varieties in Alicante, on the southeast coast of Spain. Generally a powerful, tannic wine from a grape that loves the hot Mediterranean sun, monastrell here surprises with subtlety and smoothness. Finca Casa Balaguer began with legendary natural wine producer Rafa Bernabe. When it came time for Rafa to step back from winemaking, he sold the winery to his assistant, and fellow Valencian, Andres Carull. Together with his wife, Marta Ribera, Andres farms 25 hectares of grape varieties particular to their region. In addition to being certified organic, their vineyards also benefit from biodynamic farming methods. Their ‘Picofino’ monastrell comes from the estate’s own vineyards in Andres and Rafa’s hometown of Villena, on soils of limestone and sand. After hand-harvesting and careful sorting, the grapes undergo a cold soak for three days. The harvest then ferments spontaneously with skins and seeds; a third is carbonically macerated. The resulting wine is bottled without fining, filtration, or any addition of sulfites. Delicious with a slight chill, this light monastrell delights with ripe red fruit and an easy, smooth texture. Certified organic, biodynamically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
