“Soif, American Style,” is the motto at Flat Brim Wines, an urban winery in Portland, Oregon, helmed by restaurateurs-turned-winemakers Becky and Ian Atkins with the goal of creating easy-to-share, easy-to-love, thirst-quenching bottlings. This one, a bright and juicy blend of pinot noir and pinot gris from the border between Oregon and Washington, exemplifies their aspiration. Typically sourced from various plots along the Columbia River, 2021 is the first vintage to be drawn from a single site, two blocks from the sustainably farmed South Hill Vineyard noted for its volcanic soils and southern sun exposure. After seven days of carbonic maceration, the grapes were pressed into tank and left alone for four months to go through malolactic conversion. The result: floral and savory herbal notes that mingle energetically with bright red and black fruit and a hint of spice, perfect for chilling, then chilling with! Sustainably grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
