Young, innovative winemaker Tiago Sampaio, inspired by his grandfather’s vineyard work, earned his PhD in Viticulture and Enology from Oregon State University. Returning home to the Douro, he founded Folias de Baco in 2007. The winery is in the Alto Douro, in the sub-region of Cima-Corgo, a high-altitude, challenging terroir. This bright, zesty pèt-nat is a blend of native Portuguese grapes: 25% arinto, 25% bical, 25% rabigato, 15% moscatel galego, and 10% alvarinho, all organically farmed. It is whole cluster pressed (with no skin contact time), and fermented with wild yeasts for four weeks in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Bottled after the first fermentation, with no fining or filtration, and no dosage. Cloudy in the glass, and lively on the palate, this refreshes with energetic bubbles, zippy acidity, and notes of green apple and grapefruit. The perfect pour to cut through early summer heat and humidity! Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
