Gareth and Rainbo Belton began Gentle Folk Wines in 2013 with a modest three barrels. They have since gently expanded their production. They currently farm ten plots along the Basket Range of the Adelaide Hills, in South Australia. Using organic and some biodynamic practices, they employ flowering cover crops, grazing animals, and organic fertilizers to maintain the health of their vineyard soils and the surrounding environment. This edition of their ‘rainbow juice’ rosé (they call it a “skin-contact rosé”) involves primarily pinot gris co-fermented with gewürztraminer on the skins for six days before pressing and aging in stainless steel. Mixed in are smaller amounts of chardonnay and sauvignon blanc, fermented on the skins for a week and aged in large oak puncheons. No filtering or fining is done. The rich pink (reminiscent of rainbow trout, perhaps?) of the finished wine comes from the addition of 2% syrah before bottling. Richly textural and aromatic, this unique rosé exudes papaya and clementine, sits nicely on the palate, and finishes clean with a touch of grapefruit pith. Organically grown, vegan.
