“Gorro” is a word that refers both to the flat caps often worn by European farmers of an older generation as well as those farmers themselves. Gorro wines are made from old, responsibly-farmed vines in Vinho Verde through precise, uncomplicated winemaking methods. While the majority of vineyards in Vinho Verde are planted quite a ways inland, the Gorro loureiro (the region’s signature grape) comes from two 40-year-old vineyards located within walking distance of the Atlantic Ocean. One vineyard on the Lima river is on schist soil, while the other is on granite at a slightly higher elevation. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel and spends about 9 months on the lees. In contrast to the simple, easy-going nature of many Vinho Verdes, this one means serious business: we’re talking next level complexity, acidity, sophistication, and just overall refreshment! Opulent aromas of orange blossom, honeysuckle, and baked apple lead to a palate of impressive depth and concentration, with layers of stewed apricot, fresh pineapple, thyme, and a zingy, briny core of lime zest that puts a salty maritime cap on things before leading into a long, lively finish. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
