Hermann Wiemer was one of the pioneers of European-style winegrowing in the Finger Lakes riesling, and the winery that still bears his name continues that world-class legacy. Hermann’s apprentice Fred Merwarth has managed the vineyards and winemaking since 2007, alongside agronomist Oskar Bynke. They produce rieslings from three distinct vineyard sites along the western shore of Seneca Lake. Given the challenging climatic conditions of New York State, it is all the more impressive that Fred and Oskar are able to grow biodynamically. This ‘Flower Day’ cuvée comes from the estate’s home vineyard: the one Hermann first planted back in 1976. The name of the wine refers to the kind of day in the biodynamic farming cycle when the plants are allowed to rest. We, in our turn, can share that spirit of rejuvenation when we open the bottle and sit back with a glass! Pressed whole cluster and fermented with indigenous yeasts, the wine is aged in stainless steel. Subtle, clean, and mineral, with all of its components in balance, this is truly beautiful riesling. Organically grown, certified biodynamic, low-intervention/natural wine.
