|Vineyard/Cellar Practices||Biodynamically Grown, Low-Intervention/Natural Wine, Vegan|
Maisulan is the winemaking project of wife and husband Eva and Luis, who farm their own vineyards in the mountains outside the medieval village of El Villar, in the Rioja Alavesa region or northwestern Spain. The name of their winery comes from the Basque word for “hard work,” and Eva and Luis certainly do put in the work to craft excellent wines from healthy soils. Not only do they avoid using any chemicals in the vineyard, their dry-farmed, untilled fields also benefit from biodynamic practices such as cover-crop fertilizing, sheep milk serum, and the application of other organic products. Their Rioja blanco, of 100% viura, is appropriately called ‘Honoratus Aurum’: precious gold. From hand-harvested vines vines 35-80 years old, growing above 1800 feet above sea level, it ferments with indigenous yeasts and is minimally fined and filtered. It ages in a combination of French (75%) and American (25%) oak. Densely packed with flavors of banana leaf, roasted coconut, vanilla, and nutmeg, with a medium-weight texture that finishes fresh. Biodynamically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
