Hope Well is the creation of Mimi Casteel in the heart of wine country in Oregon. She describes her wine as “the alchemy between the natural world, my deep love for this ground and the unsung heroes whose strong hands, hearts and minds have helped me make it." She is the daughter of Ted Casteel and Pat Dudley, co-founders of Bethel Heights Vineyard, growing up working in a vineyard and winery. Her early academic and working careers focused on history, the Classics, forest science, botany and ecology. Despite her successes in these fields, she found herself returning to Bethel Heights in 2005. In 2015, she began her own project, using biodynamic and organic principles in the vineyard and low-intervention in the winery. The pinot noir grapes come from both volcanic soils and soils with ancient marine sediment, 15% of the grapes ferment whole cluster, and native yeasts are used for both primary and malolactic fermentation. It is aged for 11.5 months in a combination of new (25%), once filled, and neutral French oak, and bottled unfined. Oregon saw higher maximum temperatures, lower rainfall, and devastating wildfires that actually created a layer that protected the grapes from what could have been terrible sunburn and came at a time when they were not susceptible to smoke taint. The wine is supple and round on the palate, with luscious dark fruit and streaks of potting soil, stems, vanilla and spice, minerality, slate, and charcoal with fine tannin and balanced acidity.
