Continuing with his great grandfather’s legacy, Maximiliano and José Hernández Toso founded Huarpe Wines in 2003, combining their talents of José’s expertise and international experience with Maximiliano’s managerial talent. The name is after the Huarpe people, a peaceful pre-Columbian civilization in the Mendoza region. Agrelo, a sub-region of Mendoza, is world renowned for its rich and aromatically complex wines. It is located in the western foothills of the Andes Mountains at a high altitude with intense daytime sun and chilly nights, and is a part of the Luján de Cuyo department. The soils in Agrelo are sandy loam with a deeper layer of gravelly stones, made up from eroded, mineral-rich material from the slopes of the Andes, which have exceptional drainage. Drip irrigation is necessary, as the climate is extremely dry, and with it, winemakers are able to carefully control yield and vigor to produce small berries with high concentration of sugars, acids and tannins. This bold and generously fruitful wine contains 80% malbec and 20% cabernet sauvignon and is aged for 14 months in French oak, giving it great structure and balance. Certified sustainable.
