Among the "small jewels in Montalcino's original growing area", Il Colle was once a part of Conti Costanti's Colle al Matrichese, a property that sits at a high altitude of 400-450 meters. The elevation yields delicate wines, and the fruit from these vineyards is blended with grapes from a more southerly vineyard (Castelnuovo dell'Abate at 220 meters), that the family had purchased in 1998. The origins of Il Colle date to 1972, when Alberto Carli planted vines with Giulio Gambelli, a practitioner of traditional winemaking techniques. Employing natural yeasts, no temperature control, long maceration on skins, and no filtering, Alberto aged his Brunellos in Slavonian botti. Alberto and Giulio stayed true to these methods, as did Caterina who took over the rustic estate upon Alberto's death in 2001, and the winery has changed little in the past 40 years. Brunello is the crown jewel of Montalcino wines, and this is an impressive example. 100% sangiovese, this offers up enticing red berry, crushed roses, cedar, forest floor, and new leather aromas. Effortlessly melding structure and subtlety, the full-bodied palate bursts with layers of spiced red cherry, incense, and warm earth. A backbone of firm, velvety tannins balance freshness with structure with an elegant texture and lingering finish with hints of savory salinity and spice.
