Arguably the finest producer in the Rheinhessen, Klaus-Peter Keller specializes in single-vineyard, old-vine riesling. The Keller family has owned parts of the Dalsheimer Hubacker vineyard since 1789. Their knowledge of centuries of winemaking history in the region has led them to rediscover forgotten plots that yield world-class wine. The combination of historic, mineral-rich vineyards and Klaus-Peter’s non-interventionist approach in the cellar has resulted in wines hailed as the “Montrachets of Germany,” defined by their complexity, texture, and weight. Since taking over the estate from his father in 2001, Klaus-Peter and his wife Julia have dedicated the vineyards to organic farming methods and the winery to low-intervention winemaking. The focus has shifted toward drier styles of riesling, with truly spectacular results from their grosses gewächs cuvées. This „von der Fels“ (‘from the rocks’) release blends together a few handpicked barrels from a few of the vineyards that Keller has helped make famous: Abtserde, Morstein, Kirchspiel, and Hubacker. In its 20th anniversary bottling, this „von der Fels“ benefitted from ideal weather conditions through the growing season. The particular characteristics of each vineyard site complement each other, resulting in a unique riesling of exemplary elegance, depth, and lasting minerality.
