Slovenia is the kind of country where pretty much every snow-dusted mountain peak that ought to have a fairytale castle perched on top actually does. It’s also a country that produces great wines, especially skin-contact and naturally-produced wines from grapes native to the region. Miha Kelhar’s estate is located in the southeastern corner of Slovenia, very near the Croatian border, in the middle of a large nature preserve. The vineyards have always been farmed organically; more recently, Kelhar has begun the transition to biodynamic practices and has focused more intently on, as he modestly says, “cloudy, natural wines.” This “Žan Red” blend includes not only red varieties Žametna Črnina and Blaufränkisch, but also Kraljevina and other local white varieties. The resulting wine displays an amazing gradation of color, from pink to deep magenta. Served chilled, this wine delivers bright, tart cranberry and blood orange on the nose, with flavors of rooibos and hibiscus tea. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
