Port wines are famous for their longevity. Fortified with neutral spirits to stop the fermentation process, Port can age in the barrel for decades and mellow in the bottle for decades longer. Of the makers of old Port, however, only C.N. Kopke can claim the title of world’s oldest port house. Before even the British Port craze of the 18th century, Nicolau Kopkë was exporting Portuguese fortified wine out of the shipping house that bore his name. But, of course, the company’s legacy is not built on longevity alone. Kopke Colheita Port Wines are renowned all over the world for their extraordinary quality. Each is made from a singular harvest, aged in wood for as long as possible, and only bottled upon commission. The wines of Kopke and Port in general are special because they are truly intergenerational projects, started by one winemaker, passed down and cared for by the next. The current steward and head winemaker of Kopke, Carla Tiago, is extremely passionate and capable of carrying on this 300+ year legacy.
The 1967 Colheita Tawny Port is elegant and layered, with classic caramel, molasses, spice, and dried citrus peel notes, lifted by delicate hints of bitter hazelnut and woodsmoke. It maintains incredible freshness and energy for its age, leaning more towards a refined, bright profile than a heavy, thick one, with subtlety and complexity to spare, and a finish that lingers for ages. Enjoy this classic - perhaps while spinning The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper” - another iconic 1967 release!
