|Appellation/Sub-Region||Brunello di Montalcino DOCG|
|Vineyard/Cellar Practices||Organically Grown|
La Gerla is a relatively young estate, being purchased in 1976 by Sergio Rossi, who left a successful advertising career to follow his passion for the vineyards. The previous owners of the estate were the Biondi Santi family, who were producing one of the top Brunellos in the area. He created and marketed the La Gerla brand two years later in 1978 to much success. He tragically passed away in 2011, but the estate is still owned and run by his wife, Donatella, and dedicated team members that have been with La Gerla for decades. All of their grapes are harvested by hand from organically grown terroirs in Montalcino and all of their wines are aged in natural cellars in large Slavonian oak barrels, with the Brunello seeing a minimum of 24 months in barrel and another 8 months in bottle before release. This bottling is velvety and ethereal, with rich fruit and spices with aromas of violet, tobacco, cinnamon, and leather. It is a large and robust wine, but the tannins are beautifully integrated and elegant with an incredibly long finish. It’s drinking lovely today in 2020, but can certainly be aged for over 20 years. Organically grown.
