La Torre is owned and operated by the Anania family, who originally came from Calabria in southern Italy where they produced bufala mozzarella and other agricultural products. Current owner Luigi Anania’s father, Giuseppe, purchased the 36-ha property in 1976, located at the highest altitude in Brunello at 1500 ft above sea level. Their first vintage was released in 1982 to an enthusiastic reception, and since then the bar has only gotten higher. The Brunello di Montalcino is fermented in stainless steel and then racked into large Slavonian “botte” (barrels) and aged for 42 months. A small amount (approximately 12%) of the wine spends 12 months in smaller barrels. A true classic, this Brunello is well balanced but powerful, with classic sangiovese red fruit flavors joined by savory notes and hints of darker berry fruit, tobacco, leather, cedar, and spice. The wine is drinking beautifully today but could easily be cellared for up to 20 years!
