La Vecchia Posta is situated in the Colli Tortonesi (Tortona hills), where the southern edge of the Piedmont begins to climb into the Ligurian Apennines. Roberto Semino tends to 3.5ha of vineyards dedicated to native Piedmontese varietals, including timorasso, cortese, dolcetto, croatina, and, here, barbera. He has been farming organically since the 1980s: one of the first to do so in all of Italy. He also follows a hands-off approach in the winery, only fermenting with indigenous yeasts, adding very little sulfur, and only aging in stainless steel and neutral tonneaux to allow for the purest expression of the terroir. In this case, the uniqueness of the region comes through in bright, rich red-fruit flavors, shaped by smooth but earthy tannins. An additional six months on the lees after malolactic fermentation gives a depth of flavor and complexity of perfume that separates this from your average barbera. Think dark-roasted coffee poured over fresh wild mountain strawberries. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
