The Bénard-Pitois family first began cultivating land in Champagne’s Mareuil sur Ay region in 1878. Not content to rest solely on tradition, third generation wine growers Michelle and Laurent Bénard-Pitois found themselves on the vanguard of organic viticulture in the 1990s. In 2012 they achieved full organic certification on their 2.5 ha in both Mareuil sur Ay and Avenay val d’Or, and now practice biodynamic viticulture as well. Their deeply rooted vines yield an intense, transparent expression of terroir, enhanced by a deftly light touch in the cellar that includes ambient yeast fermentations and no added sulfur. This certified organic grower champagne was disgorged in 2021. Dark gold in the glass, it offers an elegant nose of brioche, toasted nuts, and flinty minerals. The palate is full and luscious, with layers of delicate floral notes, buttered toast, toasted brioche, and pâte à choux. Sumptuous and saline, with texture and nuance that lasts for ages, this is a classic for any occasion. Certified organic, biodynamically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
