The name “Maggiorina” refers to an idiosyncratic growing method traditionally used in the area around the area around Maggiora and Boca and refined by nineteenth-century architect (and Piedmontese native) Alessandro Antonelli. Three vines are planted together and developed upwards toward the four cardinal points of the compass. When winemaker Christophe Künzli first came to know the vineyards of Boca in 1988, he carefully learned the traditional growing practices from Antonio Cerri, one of the last local wine-growers of the region. This wine includes ten grape varieties (white as well as red) in addition to the nebbiolo, croatina, and vespolina that dominate. Most of the vines are over a century old, and all are cared for and harvested by hand. This unique field blend combines fine tannins with wild blueberry, mulberry, and brambly flavors and a hint of crushed, stemmy herbs. Sustainably grown, vegan.
