Claire Fabre, winemaker for Le Vieux Donjon, manages her family’s 18-hectare estate together with her brother, François Michel. They make just two wines—this traditionally-styled Châteauneuf-du-Pape red and a corresponding white—though Claire brought a love of California wines back from her time working at Harlan Estate in Napa. Fully a third of Le Vieux Donjon’s vines, in named plots scattered through the Châteauneuf appellation, are over 100 years old. The blend is generally 75% grenache, 10% mourvèdre, 10% syrah, and 5% cinsault, though often with trace amounts of other grape varieties as well. Claire and François adhere to organic farming practices and take care in partially destemming the harvest before fermentation in concrete vats and 18 months’ aging in foudre (80%) and vat (20%). With gorgeous red fruit flavors and velvety texture, threaded through with pepper and smoke, clove and anise, this is a Châteauneuf to savor now or keep for another ten years. Organically grown.
