Macari Wines has roots in the 1930s and 40s, when Joseph Macari Sr. grew up making wine with his father and grandfather in their basement in Corona, Queens, NY. In the mid-1960s, Joseph purchased a 500 acre potato farm on Long Island Sound, but the farm remained fallow until 1995, when his son, Joseph Jr. and Joesph’s wife Alexandra moved to the North Fork and began planting vineyards. Joseph Jr. studied with trailblazing biodynamic viticulturalists Alan York and Alvaro Espinoza and from them developed a holistic ecological philosophy that resulted in great biodiversity in the Macari vineyards and high quality fruit. Still a family affair today, Macari’s ‘Collina’ cuvée pays homage to the family’s Italian heritage and the Mattituck Hills - sand bluffs that face the Long Island Sound (“collina” means “hill”). This merlot is smooth and medium-bodied, with rich, spicy hints of oak on the nose and loads of juicy plum and blackcurrant on the palate. Sustainably grown.
