A legend in the California wine scene, Mayacamas Vineyards is perched high on the slopes of Mount Veeder, at elevations ranging from 1,800-2,400 ft. The estate encompasses 475 acres, of which a mere 50 are under vine. The cooler mountain climate of the Mount Veeder appellation produces some of the lowest yields in Napa Valley, with soils high in acidity and distinctive mineral character. This merlot is sourced entirely from dry-farmed vineyard sites high on Mount Veeder, resulting in one of the purest expressions of the grape possible in the US. Great restraint is used in the winemaking process, with the focus of expressing the more serious side of the grape. 2015 vintage was the last of a multi-season drought, and yields were incredibly low. After fermentation and maceration for two weeks in open-top cement vats and stainless steel tanks, the wine was aged in large, neutral oak barrels for 12 months. A luxuriously expressive nose unfurls layer after layer of raspberry, black plum, violet, and spices of anise, cardamom, and clove. The texture is elegant, with bright acidity and gravelly mineral notes mingling with black fig, pomegranate, plum, cherry, and tobacco notes. It finishes with a big, mouth-filling texture. Simply benchmark merlot.
