Fourth generation vigneron Michel Guignier seeks to produce wines as naturally as possible to preserve their vitality, transparency, and sense of terroir while protecting the environment. He is gradually converting his estate to full organic certification, although he has been utilizing sustainable practices such as composting and planting grasses and herbs between rows for many years. Guignier is located in Villié Morgon, in the heart of the Morgon AOC in Beaujolais, an appellation known for its decomposed granite and crumbly schist soils known as “roches pourries” (“rotten rock”). This ‘Vielles Vignes’ Morgon is made from grapes hand harvested from vines 60+ years old. After harvesting, the grapes are carefully sorted to select only the fully ripened whole bunches, then vinified in cement vats using indigenous yeasts. Rich aromas of perfumed red berries give way to a medium-bodied palate that is fresh and juicy. Flavors of savory red fruit and hints of strawberry Twizzlers mingle with earthy notes of cedar spice and barnyard, before finishing with gently integrated tannins. Accessible and versatile but far from simple, this is an easy grab for pairing with food. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
