One of the most historic wine regions of Greece, the region of Nemea has been making wine for centuries in spite of the threats of war and phylloxera. Located throughout the hillsides, plateaus, and flat lands of the Peloponnese, (an area first recognized by Homer, who called it Ampeloessa, meaning "full of vines”), the vineyards here are known for their diversity and complexity. Nemea is the most renowned region in southern Greece for the production of red wines. The primary grape here is agiorghitiko (“St. George’s”) which produces wines noted for their deep red color, complex aroma and long, velvety palate. Agiorghitiko’s soft tannins, combined with balanced acidity, lend itself to many different styles of wine, both red and rosé. The Mitravelas winery was founded by two brothers in the early 1900s, and today is the oldest modern winery in Nemea, still family run. This agiorghitiko is smooth and medium-bodied, with lush dark red raspberry and cherry flavors accented with floral and herbal notes. Defined acidity makes for a food-friendly yet easy drinking bottle. A fantastic value, this makes a perfect partner with roasted chicken, lamb or mushroom kebabs, and heavier tapas and appetizers. Organically grown.
