The Pieralisi family has run Monte Schiavo since 1995, with eight vineyard sites in the hills of the Marche. The region is renowned for its white wines, though Monte Schiavo’s reds deserve attention alongside their verdicchio. The Pieralisis have partnered with winemaker Simone Schiaffino and well-known oenological consultant Carlo Ferrini to create a consistently excellent lineup of wines. This ‘Sassaiolo’ Rosso Piceno consists of equal parts sangiovese and montepulciano, hand-harvested from Schiavo’s Colle del Sole vineyard and aged for 12 months in Slavonian oak. Relaxed and elegant as a dusty Italian hillside in the afternoon sun, this is a classic red to accompany any pasta or pizza you might put together. Black cherry and a note of plum meld with earthiness and soft tannins. Organically grown, vegan.
