Yes, you got that right: this Chassagne-Montrachet is in fact red. Those familiar with the village, and the lieu-dit “Les chaumes,” will associate both with chardonnay, but those plots do produce their fair share of pinot noir as well. The vineyards that Thibaut Morey manages, located in some of the most hallowed spots in Burgundy, descend from the holdings of two important figures in the history of Chassagne-Montrachet: Marc Morey and Fernand Coffinet. The domaine that joins their names doesn’t just ride the coattails of a prestigious history however: Thibaut has taken steps to convert his vineyards to organic farming methods (certified organic as of 2018) and to carefully match the aging process to the particular character of the fruit. This 2017 has maturity beyond its years, with umami notes alongside bright cherry, floral accents, and enough acidity to lend structure. Organically grown.
