The prehistory of Mount Eden Vineyards goes back almost as far as the history of California itself. The vines of Martin Ray’s founding vineyard on the Mount Eden hilltop in 1943 came from Paul Masson’s 1900 La Cresta vineyard down the hill, which in turn came from Masson’s native Burgundy. Masson and Ray persisted in producing pinot noir and chardonnay at a time when California wine culture did not yet recognize the particularities of certain varieties, nevermind the uniqueness of certain vineyard sites. Current winemaker at Mount Eden, Jeffrey Patterson, also brought to the site his love for French wines and has melded that style with his California terroir since taking over in the 1980s. This Mount Eden pinot noir comes from just seven acres of the estate vineyard, which produces a famously low yield per acre. It ferments with indigenous yeasts and ages for 18 months in French Burgundy barrels (75% new) before bottling without fining or filtration. Earthy and herbal, it develops flavors of grilled strawberry and crushed wild blueberries in the glass. Vegan.
