In a rural area north of Lisbon, winemaker André Gomes Pereira discovered a handful of backyard vineyards estimated to be 120-140 years old. These individual plots, along with the rest of the kitchen garden, provided for the local community. As the vines got older, however, so did their proprietors; the younger generation had other commitments elsewhere. Rather than let his discovery disappear, André teamed up with London-based company Portuguese Story to put these unique vineyards to use. Saved from destruction, these vines remain “uncondemned.” The vines’ narrow escape is represented on the label, we assume allegorically. No evidence that human-sized rabbits were involved. In any case, the result inside the bottle carries on the Portuguese “palhete” tradition (described by medieval monks) of fermenting white and red wine grapes together. This palhete combines Fernão Pires (white) and trincadeira (red) to produce a mix of baking spice, flowers, and tobacco on the nose, with black fruit flavors and chocolatey tannins. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
