|Vineyard/Cellar Practices||Organically Grown, Low-Intervention/Natural Wine, Vegan|
Baga, a red grape variety particular to the Bairrada region of coastal Portugal, typically produces dark, tannic wines. Niepoort’s ‘Nat Cool’ version couldn’t be more different: this expression of baga is light, fruity, and eminently drinkable. Not necessarily the wine one might expect from Niepoort, a venerable Port producer drawing from vines dating back nearly a century. Here Niepoort demonstrates the versatility of baga, as well as the ocean-inflected terroir of Bairrada, with a liter of bright, fun, food-friendly natural red. Harvested by hand, ‘Nat Cool’ ferments and ages for six months in stainless steel, undergoing malolactic fermentation. Light in color and best served chilled, it combines floral aromatics with seaside minerality and balanced acidity. Wild blackberries, currants, violets, and licorice are rounded out with a touch of spice. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
