Vineyard/Cellar Practices Organically Grown

Paris Rocchi and his sister Sabrina have managed the Rocchi family estate in the Marche since 1999, expanding their vineyard holdings and moving away from chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This versatile sparkling red wine comes from vineyards—in the medieval village of Colle de Croce—planted in the 1960s, when Paris and Sabrina’s father, Orlando, was just getting started. The grapes it is made with are called vernaccia nera, a name that interestingly includes various mutations grown in different parts of Italy. In the Marche, vernaccia nera is mostly made into sparkling reds, often with grapes that are first dried, passito-style. Not so here: the grapes for this wine were vinified fresh. Minerally as well as fruity, with abundant bubbles produced in the Charmat method, this vernaccia nera offers stony, herbal notes and a palate of juicy black cherry. Organically grown.
