It makes sense that Master Sommelier Pax Mahle is syrah-obsessed. His first restaurant position at Fahey & Fromagerie on Nantucket Island wasn’t that of your normal table busser. Starting in 1991, he would play porter and accompany restaurant owner Michael Fahey and his wealthy clientele around the Northern Rhône, tasting the very best of syrah along the way. So it’s only fitting now that Pax is making some of the finest syrah in California. Bottling his first syrah in 2000, he saw blockbuster success with the 2016 “100-point” Sonoma Hillsides. And the 2018 certainly doesn’t play second fiddle - this vintage captures an energy and spice unique to the grape planted at elevation in cooler California climates. Sourced from three vineyards, Castelli-Knight Ranch (Russian River) Griffins Lair Vineyard (Sonoma Coast), and Nellessen Vineyard (Sonoma Coast), the grapes are 100% whole-cluster fermented and aged in concrete before bottling. When served at 55°F, you feel the finesse on the palate and experience violets, cracked pepper, and lively fresh plum on the nose. For lovers of the Northern Rhône, this bottle will recalibrate everything you thought about world-class syrah! Sustainably grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
