Marek Uhnák says he owes everything to his family and the unique terroir of his vineyards in Cajkov, a village in the Nitra Region of southwest Slovakia. Defined by the Sitno Volcano and the tuff soils produced from millenia of ash and lava deposits, the Cajkov terroir produces some of the most captivating wines from grapes we thought we knew. Case-in-point: this 2019 skin-contact pinot gris. With a light ruby hue in the glass, we first get aromas of tart cherry, lemon peel, fresh roses, struck-match, and a little barnyard. These flavors persist on the palate, with a refreshing, light-bodied texture.
