Poderi Colla was founded by Tino Colla and his niece Federica in 1994. Winemaking in the Colla family history goes as far back as 1703. Beppe (Tino’s older brother and Federica’s father) had a legendary career as the definitive authority on the Langhe appellations and one of the founding fathers of the Alba DOCs in the 1960s (sadly, he passed away in January of 2019). In 1961, he was the first to vinify and bottle single-vineyard selections. The family has property in Barolo, Barbaresco, and Alba, and seek to showcase Piedmont’s classic red wines. All of them are single-varietal, grown without the use of harsh chemicals, aged in traditional Slavonian casks, and bottled with no filtration. The Dardi di Bussia subzone is historically considered one of the great Barolo crus, and the nebbiolo grapes for this Barolo come from vines planted between 1970 and 1985. After fermentation, it spends 24 to 28 months in oak, and has an elegantly spiced bouquet with hints of flowers, small red fruits, and tar. It is incredibly structured on the palate, with power and complexity and a core of ripe fruit with a hint of licorice. It has soft tannins and has the capacity to age for more than a decade.
