|Vineyard/Cellar Practices||Biodynamically Grown, Low-Intervention/Natural Wine, Vegan|
Austria’s Weinviertel is the source of much of the easy-drinking, affordable Grüner Veltliner found today in the US. Florian Schuhmann’s grower-project “Quantum” eschews literally every aspect of how wines are generally farmed and made in the flat, fertile plains of the Weinviertel. “Quantum” refers to both scale and focus: Schuhmann farms less than four hectares with no plans to expand, and is personally involved in every step of the process from vineyard work to cellar work to label design and production. He also only focuses on old vines, forgotten plots that yield tiny amounts of fruit. Geographically, Schuhmann’s home of Maissau is 25 miles from the Czech border, and a good 40 miles to Vienna. All of this adds up to miniscule quantities of wine that is simultaneously unique and experimental, yet ultimately delicious and drinkable. This “continuous cuvée” began with a rich red (“Rot”) wine in 2012. The next year’s vintage of the same wine was dramatically different in style, almost a rosé (“Rosa”). Schuhmann bottled both vintages together and in the process, may have created Quantum’s iconic wine: a wine that merges the depth of a red wine with the refreshing energy of a white wine. This is a solera-style wine, as he has been pulling wine out and adding juice to the same tank for several vintages now. This release is about 30% wine from the solera and 70% wine from the 2018 vintage, mainly made up of the Portugieser grape, with some blauburgunder in there as well. The 2018 vintage proved to be quite powerful, with an intense nose of concentrated, plummy, deep purple fruit, loads of dark forest and earth, and touches of pine duff and loam. Remarkably integrated and energetic, put a slight chill on this and enjoy with a vast array of foods. Biodynamically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
